Study in Canada: How to Get Your Spouse an Open Work Permit in 2025

If you’re planning to study in Canada and want your spouse to accompany you with the ability to work, understanding the recent changes to immigration rules is crucial.

As of April 2024, the Canadian government implemented new regulations that limit which international students can extend open work permits to their spouses.

The New Rules for Spousal Open Work Permits

Previously, international students enrolled in a wide variety of programs, including two-year college diplomas, could apply for open work permits for their spouses. However, this is no longer the case. The updated rules now focus on specific fields of study and higher education programs.

If you want your spouse to receive an open work permit, here’s what you should consider studying:

  1. Graduate-Level Programs (Master’s or PhD)
Any international student pursuing a Master’s degree or a PhD is eligible to apply for an open work permit for their spouse.

  2. Specific Bachelor’s Degrees
For undergraduate programs, only certain fields of study qualify:

    • Law

    • Education

    • Engineering

    • Nursing Sciences

    • Pharmacy

  3. If your bachelor’s degree falls outside these categories, your spouse will not be eligible for an open work permit.
