Key Updates to Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program in 2024

Recent changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program may impact international students in Canada.

Here’s what you need to know to plan your studies and work permit application effectively. For complete and detailed information please visit the IRCC websites using the links at the end of this article.

1. PGWP Duration Based on Study Length

  • All programs under 8 months: Not eligible for a PGWP.

  • Master’s program of 8 months or more: Eligible for a 3-year PGWP.

  • All programs of 2 years duration or longer:  Eligible for a 3-year PGWP.

  • Non master’s programs between 8 months and less than 2 years: PGWP duration will match the length of your study program.

  • We recommend that your passport be valid for at least 3.5 years before applying.

2. One PGWP Per Lifetime

  • You can only receive a PGWP once, so if you pursue multiple programs, ensure both are PGWP-eligible to apply after completing all of them.

  • You must apply for your PGWP within 180 days of completing your last studies.

3. New Language Requirements

  • For any university program you must provide a Language Exam with a minimum CLB 7 to be eligible for the PGWP.

  • For any eligible college program you must provide a Language Exam with a minimum 5 CLB  to be eligible for the PGWP.

4. New Field-Specific Requirements for Student permit applications submitted on or after November 1st, 2024

  • All Bachelors (studied at a university), Master’s and PHDs programs in any field are eligible for a PGWP

  • All other programs studied at a university or college: Only programs in fields such as Agriculture, Healthcare, STEM, Trades, and Transportation will qualify for the PGWP.
